Why I Became a Trichologist
Meet Gina Lourens, certified Trichologist serving Bournemouth, Christchurch and Dorset
I have spent more than 40 years working professionally with hair. During my years as a hairdresser, women would sit in my chair worried about shedding, thinning or seeing more of their scalp than before. It was heartbreaking to see how much it affected their confidence – and to know that, at the time, I could make their hair look better for the day but could not explain why it was happening or what they could do about it.
I wanted to do more than reassure them. I wanted to understand what was happening beneath the surface and give them genuine answers. That is what led me to discover trichology and begin my specialist training. I received my certification from the Institute of Trichologists in November 1998, followed by my Diploma from The Trichological Society on 22 May 2002.
Today, I help women, men and children make sense of hair loss and scalp concerns through detailed, one-to-one consultations at my private Christchurch clinic. Helping someone move from fear and uncertainty to understanding, hope and renewed confidence is still the reason I do this work.

My approach
A thorough investigation, an action plan for you to follow
Hair loss is never just hair. It can affect your confidence, identity and how you feel when you look in the mirror. It can also be linked to many different factors. My role is not to jump to a conclusion or sell you a treatment. It is to examine the problem carefully, look at the wider picture and help you understand what may be contributing.
Examine the Hair & Scalp properly
I examine the scalp skin and hair follicles with a digital microscope checking for inflammation,
breakage and regrowth. Clues that help with the diagnoses. Or that need further attention.
Trace the symptom(s) back
We discuss your health, hormones, stress, diet, medication, supplements and the products you currently use.
Recommendations only if they will help
Where bloodwork may help, I can explain which tests could be useful, write to your GP or help arrange private testing.
Honest, practical, long-term guidance
I provide a written plan without pressure to buy products, commit to treatment or pursue options that are not right for you.
My professional journey
From Hairdressing to Trichology
My background in hairdressing taught me how personal hair can be and how deeply a change in it can affect someone’s confidence. Trichology gave me the knowledge to investigate why those changes happen and to give people clearer, more useful answers. I became certified through the Institute of Trichologists in November 1998 and completed my Diploma with The Trichological Society on 22 May 2002.
1
More than 40 years working with hair
I began in hairdressing and worked in salons in London and Bournemouth. I regularly met women who were frightened by changes to their hair but did not know where to turn. Wanting to help them properly became the starting point for everything that followed.
2
Specialist training in Trichology
Wanting to understand the causes behind those changes led me to formal trichology training. I received my certification from the Institute of Trichologists in November 1998 and my Diploma from The Trichological Society on 22 May 2002.
3
Experience across different settings
My career has included running hair and trichology services in Bournemouth and Cornwall, as well as working within a GP surgery environment.
4
Continued learning as knowledge changes
I continue to attend seminars and follow research into hormones, nutrition, medication and other factors that can affect the hair cycle.
Working with me
Personal, attentive and supportive
People often arrive feeling worried, confused or afraid of the worst. I understand that the concern is not simply cosmetic – it can affect confidence, femininity, identity and how you feel about yourself. My aim is to make the process feel calmer and more manageable by listening properly, explaining what I find and giving you a plan you understand.
